The centers and institutes affiliated with the Masters of Engineering and Public Policy program are a direct reflection of the issues and research being pursued within the program itself. Not only is significant research taking place and important issues being addressed, but the centers and institutes offer students an opportunity to participate in the real world of policymaking. In doing so, students are working under the guidance of accomplished faculty who are directly influencing policy issues in a wide range of areas.

CATT Lab

Center for Advanced Transportation Technology Laboratory
The Center for Advanced Transportation Technology Laboratory
(CATT Lab) supports National, State, and local efforts to provide safe and efficient transportation systems through improved operations and management by means of research and development, technology implementation, training and education.

CEEE

Center for Environmental Energy Engineering
The Center for Environmental Energy Engineering (CEEE), is a leader in research and education in environmentally responsible, economically feasible distributed energy conversion systems for buildings and transportation. The center is divided into four consortia: ACTA, ISOC, SAES and AHX/EC.

CHESS

Center for Human Enhanced Secure Systems
The Center for Human Enhanced Secure Systems (CHESS) is a part of the University of Maryland Institute for Advances Computer Studies (UMIACS). CHESS researchers investigate computer security at all levels including: new ways to write and test software and investigation of public policy and economic implications of secure systems.

CIER

Center for Integrative Environment Research
The Center for Integrative Environmental Research (CIER) at the University of Maryland addresses complex environmental challenges through research that explores the dynamic interactions among environmental, economic and social forces and stimulates active dialogue with stakeholders, researchers and decision makers.

CIDCM

Center for International Development and Conflict Mgt
The Center for International Development and Conflict Management (CIDCM) is an interdisciplinary research center at the University of Maryland. CIDCM seeks to prevent and transform conflict, to understand the interplay between conflict and development, and to help societies create sustainable futures for themselves.

CISSM

Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland
The Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland (CISSM) conducts research, sponsors courses, and promotes dialogue between policy analysts and practitioners. CISSM is a research center focused on the security implications of globalization. CISSM is located at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy.

CTSM

Center for Technology & Systems Management
The Center for Technology and Systems Management (CTSM) the expertise of both in-house experts and external associates to offer capabilities to its clients that include: Systems engineering; Reliability, risk, statistical and decision studies; Information technology; Project management; Robotics, automation, control and intelligent systems.

Maryland Water Resources Research Center
The Maryland Water Resources Research Center develops new technology and more efficient methods for resolving local, state and national water resources problems. The center was established as part of the Federal Water Resources Research Act, and supports water resources research, education, and information dissemination.

NCSG

National Center for Smart Growth
The National Center for Smart Growth Research and Education (NCSG) is a non-partisan center for research and leadership training on smart growth and related land use issues in Maryland, in metropolitan regions around the nation, and in Asia and Europe and was founded in 2000 as a cooperative venture of four University of Maryland schools.

Sloan Center

Sloan Biotechnology Industry Center
The Sloan Biotechnology Industry Center focuses on understanding what drives competitiveness within the U.S. biotechnology industry. The center's mission is to provide strategic, data-driven information to biotechnology executives, policymakers, and other decision makers to improve the competitive advantage of biotechnology firms.

NanoCenter

University of Maryland NanoCenter
Maryland NanoCenter promotes major nano research and education initiatives, provides one-stop shopping for those seeking expertise and/or partnerships at Maryland, and supplies infrastructure to facilitate nano activities at Maryland through equipment, staff support, and informational and administrative functions.

UMERC

UMD Energy Research Center
The University of Maryland Energy Research Center (UMERC) is a multidisciplinary initiative dedicated to advancing the frontiers of energy science and technology, with a special focus on forward-looking approaches for alternative energy generation and storage and a broad array of research areas critical for future energy technology.
